Gym memberships on the rise with New Year resolutions to 'get fit'

Publish date: 2024-04-24

The gym might be a busier scene than typical in the coming days — as many make the new years resolution to ‘get fit’.

Reports show improving finances, mental health, and fitness are among the most common new year resolutions

Kelly Morgan, the owner of Morgainz Fitness in Cambria county says she is expecting an increase of members to join the gym as 2024 is right around the corner.

“I think this weekend will be busy, but then it, again college students are still home," said Morgan. "Sometimes people are still recovering from the holiday, but yeah definitely the month of January is definitely one of the highest grossing months of the year. So, its good for the gym business. So, believe it or not January of course is a big influx cause again people are always new year’s, but sometimes people wait until February because their waiting for the new year’s people to fall off and sadly that is a thing.”

Morgan says in her almost 12 years of operating a gym, she's seen this firsthand — where people give up on their new years fitness goals all too soon.

“I would say people stick it out at least for a few months, but sadly the stats still show that over 70 percent of people fall off in the first year,” Morgan added. “We have the tools here to do it. So, believe it or not its maybe 10 percent gym, which I think is the best thing you can do for yourself cause somedays it’s just therapy, but the nutrition part has to go with it.”

Morgan says at Morgainz Fitness — similar to other gyms — you can check out their programs and what they offer before becoming a member.

“We have guest passes, we have day passes, we have week passes. We’re super good to our students or like active-duty military people they always get half off, but again still we never raised our prices so five bucks for a guest pass is pretty awesome, you know coming with a member that’s already in good standing here, so a lot of people take advantage of that," Morgan told 6 News. "At the end of the day, life is too short to be unhappy and I want people to be comfortable in their own skin and this automatically in a week of people coming, their like ‘is it crazy that I already feel better’ and I’m like no its not crazy, its like magic, but you got to show up and put some effort into it.”
