Hunter Biden's gun trial set to begin amid already tense election season

WASHINGTON (TND) — While one trial involving a former President is close to ending, another involving the current President’s family is about to start. Hunter Biden’s criminal trial could add fuel to an already explosive election season.
The first criminal trial for the President’s son is set to begin next week in Delaware. He’s facing federal charges related to a gun purchase and lying about drug use to buy the weapon in 2018.
President Biden visited his late son Beau’s widow, Hallie Biden, days before she’s set to testify in the trial. Hunter was dating Hallie at the time of his alleged crimes. Critics questioned the visit.
“It’s poor, poor decision-making. Very bad optics," said former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Fox News.
The White House said the visit was about the ninth anniversary of Beau Biden’s death this week.
“She is family, she was married, obviously to his late son," said White House Press Secretary Karrine Jean-Pierre when asked about the visit. She denied it was to talk about the upcoming trial.
The trial could drum up embarrassing details of Hunter’s life. Drug addiction, divorce, compromising pictures, his laptop, and documents related to his estranged daughter are all materials involved in the court filing.
The news cycle surrounding the trial has the potential to be a damaging distraction as the election gets closer.
Towson University Professor Emeritus Richard Vatz said the President could make a lot of problems go away if he opted to pardon both his son and former President Donald Trump.
“If I were advising him, I probably would have said, ‘You know, Joe, this would be unusual, but given the situation you’re in, I’d pardon both Trump and your son’ and that way it gets rid of the issues," Vatz said.
That is a highly unlikely scenario and the White House has already said Hunter would not get a pardon.
In another twist, Lunden Roberts, the mother of Hunter’s estranged daughter, is releasing a tell-all book as the Democratic National Convention takes place in August. It’s being published by the co-chair of the Super PAC supporting another Biden election foe: Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Hunter Biden is also facing federal charges of tax fraud in California. That trial was postponed until September.
