The area code 582 will be joining 814 next year, requiring callers to start 10-digit dialing, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced.

Officials say the 582 area code will be assigned to new phone numbers once the current supply of 814 area codes are exhausted.

“The use of an overlay area code preserves existing phone numbers for residents and businesses in the region, while also ensuring that a supply of new numbers will be available for decades to come,” the PUC said in a release.

Starting April 3, 2021, customers will have to use 10-digit dialing to make calls, meaning they will have to dial either 814 or 582 along with the seven-digit phone number.

The PUC provided this updated timeline for the new area code’s implementation:

The 814 number, established in 1947, is one of Pennsylvania’s four original area codes.
