Publish date: 2024-06-12

The 1,000 most popular baby names of 2023 were revealed Friday, with Liam and Olivia topping the charts once again.

It marks the fifth year in a row parents in the U.S. "have chosen the monikers for their little ones," according to the Social Security Administration, which releases the list each spring ahead of Mother's Day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms in our lives. Your love, strength, and selflessness motivate us all, and we thank you for everything you do,” Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley said in a news release.

The following list includes the top 10 boys' and girls' names for 2023:

"For the fifth consecutive year, Noah took the second slot for boys, and Emma for girls," the release noted. "Only one new name appeared in the Top 10 lists this year, with Mateo joining the boys for the first time."

According to the release, social media stars had "a major influence" on parents who were choosing names for their babies, as Kaeli was the fastest rising girl’s name. It moved up 1,692 spots on the list.

Parents must have really smashed the ‘like’ button for YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen (also known as Kaeli Mae), who routinely promotes a clean, tidy, and neutral-aesthetic lifestyle," the release noted. "On the boy’s side, trending in third place as the boy’s fastest riser, is Eiden -- perhaps it was TikTok creator Wyatt Eiden’s 1.6 billion views and over 3 million followers that prompted this name’s meteoric rise."

Emryn, a name for girls that translates to ruler, made its debut on the list after moving up 1,287 spots. Chozen -- which is a name of a character on the popular Netflix show, 'Cobra Kai' -- was the second fastest rising boy’s name, as it climbed to number 813.

Aside from last year's top baby names, the overall list includes information such as how popular your name was the year you were born, well as where you name ranks now and during the past 100 years.

According to the release, parents apply for their child’s Social Security card when their babies are born, with the agency describing itself as "America’s top source" for baby names." It started compiling the baby names list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.

“Know that Social Security is here to help you continue to provide for your families -- by securing a Social Security number for your child, filing for benefits for yourself or your family members, and so much more. We will never stop working for you.” O’Malley said.

The Social Security Administration’s latest data show that 3.58 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2023. That's a slight decrease from last year’s 3.66 million babies, representing an overall decline in the American birth rate.
